2012 Iron Brewer Competition

It’s that time of year again! Iron Brewer Competition!

Last year we saw Red Ledge Brewers Team “Brew Godz” win with ginger root as the secret ingredient. Good luck to all the teams that participate this year!

Iron Brewer is October 20th. Meet in the Red Salamander parking lot at 10 am to start setting up.
Cost per group is $30, this pays for the ingredients and utilities such as water. Each group (usually teams of 4 depending on how many people we have) will brew and submit only 1 beer.
Iron Brewer Shirts will be offered at cost. Last year we had long sleeve shirts for 7 bucks each.
No use of smartphones, computers, recipe books or magazines to formulate recipes. We suggest studying “Brewing Classic Styles” or “Designing Great Beers” the night before.
Keep in mind to bring all of your brew equipment and be prepared for anything. For example, last year a zester/grater would have come in handy with the the ginger root.
Last, style points count! Costumes, face paint, props, etc., are encouraged and points will be awarded as such.

We understand this may fall on an extremely important college football game, MSU vs. UofM. So, we will put into place a way we can at least listen, if not watch, the game during the brew.

Any other questions? Please email us at The Red Salamander.

Learn To Homebrew Day

The Homebrewers Association has declared November 5th “Learn To Homebrew Day.” This is a great opportunity to help our friends and family get involved with this fun hobby. Check out the Hombrewers Association website about it here.

The Red Salamander will be holding an open brew on Saturday, November 5th @ Noon. Anyone is welcome to join.

Notes:

It will be November in Michigan. Depending on weather, we are planning to brew outside. However, if need be, we can brew inside with very limited space.
Call ahead if you wish to brew a beer and have no brewing equipment. Red Salamander has limited equipment that will be in use, so just let us know early to get your name on the list.
No brewing will begin after 2pm. All-grain brewing takes 4 to 5 hours to complete. Please have all brewing finished and cleaned up by 7pm.
This is a brewing event and not a drinking event. Please bring your own beer and drink responsibly.
Discount (30%) on ingredients applies for cash or check only. No discount available for credit or debit purchase.

We hope this will be a very informative and fun event. Any questions about the event can be directed to Mitch at The Red Salamander.

Fall Firebrew Cancelled

Note from club President, Eric Sutherland:

All,
I’m sorry to inform you that we have decided to cancel the fall Firebrew. We just don’t have enough gallons reserved. We estimate we need a bare minimum of 120 gallons for the equipment to work properly. Unfortunately, we only had 85 gallons reserved.

To take the place of the firebrew event, several of us are gathering at the Red Salamander to brew on Saturday October 1, 2011. Mitch has kindly offered to open the Red Salamander at 10:00 am to accommodate us. Ron West has offered his all-grain equipment to use for anyone who wants to learn how to brew all-grain. In addition, Karl has a system to use. Remember, if you brew at the Salamander, there is a 30% discount on ingredients. If you leave what you brew at the Salamander for club use, the ingredients are free. There will be several experienced brewers on hand to guide you. If you just want to watch and learn, that’s OK too. I’m sure we will have samples on hand to try.

If you signed up to provide food for Firebrew, you are welcome to bring it to the event on Saturday. However, you are not obligated to do so.

Again, I am sorry that we have to cancel the Firebrew. I was really looking forward to it, but I’m sure we will have a good time on Saturday.

Eric
